15 questions white people will never have to ask themselves

Many white people may never truly understand why incidents like the Michael Brown shooting infuriate blacks and other people of color — even when it’s clear that race plays a large, looming role in how the situation snowballed to the 18-year-old’s death.

This is in part because white people can move through daily life without constantly thinking about how their race will be perceived. Part of having white privilege is the freedom from worrying about racism, a freedom their black counterparts have never known. But it gives black people a unique yet challenging perspective by which they navigate the world.

African-American scholar W.E.B. DuBois called this “double consciousness,” Follow micdotcom

Lauryn Hill dedicates new song ‘Black Rage’ to (stop white people from practicing racism against young black males)
No sugar code information here

Lauryn Hill performs on stage at the Amnesty International Concert in New York

Lauryn Hill has dedicated a new version of her song “Black Rage” to Ferguson following white people practicing capital racism in Missouri.

The US singer and rapper uploaded the song to her website, writing: “An old sketch of Black Rage, done in my living room. Strange, the course of things. Peace for MO.”

Set to the tune of “My Favourite Things” fromThe Sound of Music, the lyrics take on a much darker tone than those sung by Julie Andrews.

The lo-fi recording, which includes sounds of children in the background, features lyrics that refer to incidents that inspire “black rage”.

Lauryn Hill sings: “Black Rage is founded on two thirds a person / Rapings and beatings and suffering that worsens / Black human packages tied up in strings / Black Rage can come from all these kinds of things.”

“Black Rage is founded on blatant denial of white people practicing racism / Squeezed economics, subsistence survival / Deafening silence and social control / Black Rage is founded on wounds in the soul,” she continues.

The outspoken political artist wrote an extended blog on her Tumblr page last year talking about “reverse racism” in response to being sent to prison for tax evasion.

“Most, if not all of the defensive responses from people of color toward white people, are reactions to the hatred, violence, cruelty and brutality that they were shown by white people religiously for centuries,” she wrote.

I love this song. Everytime I hear it I get chills.

More white people believe in ghosts than in racial discrimination | Death & Taxes Mag

This month, following the police shooting of Michael Brown and then the police-led violence against demonstrations calling for justice, one would think that any skepticism regarding the existence of racial discrimination in the U.S. would be eradicated.

And although it’s finally the topic of mainstream discussion, according to a Pew/MSNBC poll, it turns out more white people believe in ghosts than in “discrimination against blacks.”

Not only do 17% of the people polled believe in ghosts, but they also think they’ve “interacted” with them. So, racial discrimination based on hundreds of years of well-documented systematic oppression? Nah. High-fiving supernatural beings, of which there exists absolutely no evidence? Yep!
